FAO Supports Indonesia to Fight IUUF with Measurable Fishing (PIT)

The UN agency in charge of Food and Agriculture (FAO) supports steps to eradicate illegal unreported unregulated (IUU) fishing in Indonesian waters. As is known, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is encouraging the transformation of capture fisheries as an effort to eradicate IUU fishing through the Measured Fishing (PIT) program.

"As I mentioned, the issue of IUU fishing is a global problem, not just Indonesia," said FOA Representative for Indonesia and Timor Leste, Rajendera Aryal after the ratification of the Strategic Action Program - Indonesian Seas Large Marine Ecosystem (SAP ISLME) document in Jakarta, Tuesday ( 16/1) yesterday.

PIT is a blue economy program whose implementation is a priority for the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. One of the aims of this program is to ensure the sustainability of fisheries populations.

Implementation of the program will also encourage a more responsible fishing system through catch quota mechanisms, validity of fisheries data, as well as strict supervision through technological devices and direct patrols.

KKP is currently still completing infrastructure and strengthening outreach to the community so that the implementation of PIT, which is planned to begin in early 2025, will have optimal results for the benefit of the ecology, economy and social life of the community.

Rajendra added that his party is ready to support the KKP to fight IUUF practices. According to him, this illegal practice not only threatens ecosystem sustainability but also affects the availability of fisheries commodities as a source of global protein.

"FAO has technical capabilities and experienced experts, and FAO will be very happy to collaborate with and support Indonesia in eradicating IUU fishing," he stressed.
