The results of the Global Initiative ATOC study regarding IUUF were misjudged

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) said the results of a study by the independent organizations Global Initiative ATOC and Poseidon which placed Indonesia in the top six worst countries in the world in handling IUUF were misjudged.

“This is a misjudgment. "Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is very concerned about perpetrators of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUUF/illegal, unreported and non-compliant fishing)," said the Director General of Marine and Fishery Resources Supervision (Dirjen PSDKP) KKP Rear Admiral TNI Adin Nurawaluddin when confirmed by ANTARA from Jakarta, Tuesday.

In fact, he continued, the KKP plans to increase technology-based surveillance by developing nanosatellites and strengthening surveillance vessels.

In the future, his party will continue to maximize monitoring of marine and fisheries resources using satellites and technology in combating IUUF.

"We are maximizing monitoring with satellites and VMS, maximizing the operation of surveillance vessels and air patrols (Air Surveillance), especially in border areas," he said.

In 2023, he continued, the KKP has increased its supervisory powers through the addition of four ships consisting of two units donated from Japan, namely the Monitoring Ships (KP) Orca 05 and KP Orca 06 as well as the addition of two domestically built ships plus two Rapid Reaction Units in the form of speedboat with a high speed of 57 knots.

"So PSDKP's current strength has 34 marine and fisheries monitoring vessels," he said.

The role of the community, he added, is also involved through Community Supervisory Groups (Pokmawas) of 1,345 groups throughout Indonesia as an extension in carrying out supervision in the maritime and fisheries sector.

In a webinar entitled IUUF Risk Index: Indonesia on the Global Fisheries Map, Indonesian Destructive Fishing Watch (DFW) Research Manager Felicia Nugroho revealed that based on studies by the Global Initiative ATOC and Poseidon, Indonesia was ranked in the top six worst countries in the world in handling IUUF.

"Indonesia's performance compared to other countries for 2023, Indonesia is in the top six worst countries in the world (handling IUUF) with a score of 2.89. "Under China, Russia, Yemen and Iran," said Feli.
